Make Sh*t

Friend of mine and I are putting together a hack-a-thon of sorts, this is the logo I’ve come up with. Should be an interesting time, that’s for sure.

It’ll be making it’s way onto t-shirst as well, without the “happ-a-thon” part; I’d definitely wear a tee with the Make Sh*t mantra. Can’t wait to get it printed.

Enormous Tiny Art Show #13

I *love* the Enormous Tiny Art Show series that Nahcotta holds here in Portsmouth. The small format (no larger than 10”x10”) is great for artists to experiment a little and at the same time is accessible enough for people to actually take art home.

I made only five paintings this time, all having to do with the little adventures we go on every day. The missteps, chance happenings, characters we run into… it’s all pretty amazing to me.

You can see all five pieces at the Nahcotta website.

Ampersand!

I’ve always wanted to try my hand at a big, old ampersand so I spent some time the past few evenings sketching and inking this up. I think it’s a little thinner and taller than I originally thought it would be, and maybe it could use a bit more “character. Think I’ll experiment with some embellishments when I drop it into Illustrator.

Movember Identity, Colorizing
This is where I am with the colorizing of this piece. Have to say, part of me wants to go super bright, and the other wants to go dark. That usually means it’s time for me to walk away, have a stiff drink, and do something else for a while. Though, I AM curious if anyone has an opinion…?

Movember Identity, Inks
Started up a team for Movember and have been working on an identity; mostly for fun, but perhaps for a poster or t-shirt. This is where I’ve ended up with the inking. Some corrections to alignment, etc. need to be made and then I’ll get in to colorizing.
Also, didn’t help that we’ve got a new pug puppy… I’ll blame that correction in the bottom right on her. ;)

Sketchbook study, No. 1
Not sure what was going on in my mind while I was playing around in my sketchbook this weekend, but I liked it enough to take a photo of it. Of course, then I couldn’t resist doing some color studies…

NHPK Poster: Earth
Third poster for this year’s Portsmouth PechaKucha series. Colors were tough on this one; every earth palette I came up with just seemed to lack oomph. Hopefully this one works (I like to think so…).

The 5AM Type
I’ve been getting up early the past few mornings to work on an idea I’ve had brewing. I’m always a little surprised at the number of times you have to draw the same letterform to even START getting it right. Even stranger is that most people won’t notice the difference between, say, that first horrible “B” you drew and the last one. It’s enough to make you go mad, but in a good way.
Hope to show the fully pencilled layout soon.

Theatre du Grand Guignol Poster
How can you NOT support the insanely prolific talents of Bryan White, John Herman and the rest of those creative collaborators? They’re at it again, resurrecting the Grand Guignol style of theater (read: much blood and thrilling action) with a series of three late night, one-act plays. They put out a call to illustrators/artists to submit posters for the event, so I put together this little beauty to help the cause. All proceeds from the play and the sale of the posters go to charity/non-profits.
If you’re in Portsmouth NH on July 6-15 and are looking for a horrifically good time, be sure to check it out. And watch out for the blood spray.

Weapons of Mass Creation, Biz Cards
Heading off to the Weapons of Mass Creation Fest this weekend in Cleveland. Realized a few days ago that the business card I have from my 9-5 jobbie was, um, a little dull. Okay, a lot dull. So, with no time to design and print (and in keeping with the whole event itself) I decided to paint a set of business cards.
Thought I’d have a little fun with them and came up with four variations: star, skull, pyramid and eye. Kind of a pain, but they turned out better than I thought given how much time I had to do them!
